If you are a qualified nurse thinking about working in Ireland, the process can feel complicated at first — NMBI registration, visas, English tests, employment permits. But it follows a clear order, and once you understand the steps, it becomes much easier to plan.
This guide walks you through the direct recruitment pathway: for nurses who are already qualified and ready to move to Ireland for full-time work. At EuroHire, this service is completely free for candidates — you are never charged a fee, because we are paid by the employer.
Step 1
Check that you meet the basic requirements
Before you apply, it helps to know whether this pathway is right for you. You are likely a good fit if you:
- Hold a recognised nursing degree (BSc Nursing or equivalent) that meets NMBI requirements
- Have a valid OET score, or other English language evidence accepted by NMBI
- Have at least one year of post-qualification clinical nursing experience
- Have a clean professional and criminal record
- Hold a valid passport and are ready to relocate to Ireland full-time
If you are still working towards your OET or your NMBI eligibility is not yet confirmed, a study and work programme may suit you better as a starting point.
Step 2
Submit your application
Your first step is to register your interest and provide your basic details and documents. From here, your qualifications, experience and English language results are reviewed to confirm you meet the requirements for Ireland.

Begin your NMBI registration
NMBI (the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland) is the body that registers nurses in Ireland. You apply to NMBI online from your home country, and they assess your qualifications. Based on this, NMBI issues a Decision Letter setting out the steps you need to complete before you can register.
For some nurses, registration can proceed directly. For others, the Decision Letter will require you to complete the RCSI aptitude examination first. This is decided entirely by NMBI, based on your individual qualifications — not by EuroHire or your employer.
Step 4
Get matched with an employer and interview
Once your eligibility is clear, you are matched with suitable roles based on your specialty, experience and location preferences. You will be prepared for interviews with Irish healthcare employers, and when there is a good fit, the employer makes a formal offer and issues a signed employment contract.
Step 5
Employment permit and visa
With a signed contract in place, your employer applies for your Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) on your behalf. Once the CSEP is approved, you apply for your Long-Stay D Visa from your home country. This is the visa that allows you to travel to Ireland and begin work.

Relocate and complete arrival steps
After your visa is approved, you travel to Ireland. In your first weeks you will complete a few practical steps — registering for your IRP card and PPS Number, opening a bank account, and completing Garda vetting and occupational health clearance.

Complete registration and start work
Once you have met all NMBI requirements, you receive your NMBI registration and Personal Identification Number (PIN). At that point you are a fully Registered Nurse in Ireland and can begin your role with your employer.
How long does it take?
The full process from application to starting work usually takes between three and six months. This varies depending on NMBI processing times, employer scheduling, and visa processing at your local embassy.
What you pay, and what you don't
EuroHire does not charge candidates any recruitment fee. Our service is paid for by the employer.
There are, however, some costs you will need to pay yourself as part of the process:
- NMBI registration fees — paid directly to NMBI when you apply and at registration stage
- RCSI training fee — if your NMBI Decision Letter requires the aptitude test
- RCSI examination fee — payable for the aptitude test itself
- Relocation costs — initial accommodation, visa application fee and day-to-day expenses until your first pay. Some employers cover flights or offer a relocation allowance, but this varies by employer and is confirmed at the offer stage.
